With 2024 having come to an end, yearly reviews and statistics are being published by multiple websites and publications.

But what about the leading cause of death worldwide? Statistics website Worldometer keep track of many different metrics, including deaths.

In this article, we take a look at the top 10 causes of death around the world in 2024, with the results being very, very sad.

Over 107 million people died last year, according to Worldometer

Abortion was the leading cause of death

In a sad indictment of the world we live in, abortion – the act of terminating the life of a preborn baby – was the leading cause of death.

Worldometer’s statistics revealed that there were 45.1 million abortions around the world in 2024. This equates to over 113,600 abortions being performed each day, every day.

Perhaps even more sickeningly, this equates to 4,737.4 abortions taking place every hour, and over 78 every single second. How can society be like this?

In fact, abortion accounts for a staggering 42% of all deaths around the world. It is hard to even comprehend this figure.

It is important to note that some abortions arise as a way of saving the life of the mother. However, the vast majority are not medically necessary, and is purely on the grounds of not wanting a child.

We live in a society where the heinous act of abortion has been normalised. It is a wicked world, and one that is becoming more and more morally corrupt.

Those dying from abortion are the most innocent lives of all, and have been denied the most basic human right of all – to exist.

There is also concern of the racial impact of abortion. A 2016 study found that abortion accounts for 60% of the deaths of African Americans in the United States. It is also known that Planned Parenthood was founded by a white supremacist who wanted to eliminate the black population.

There have been some improvements in tightening abortion laws, including in the United States, where several states have banned the procedure.

As the placard shows, peace begins in the womb!

The other leading causes of death

While abortion dominated the causes of death, there were other causes of death too. Coming in with just under 13 million deaths were communicable diseases.

Cancer was responsible for 8.2 million deaths in 2024. There are a range of types of cancer, so this is a rather large category. One of the causes of cancer – smoking – caused just over 5 million deaths in 2024.

There were approximately 2.5 million deaths caused by alcohol in 2024. Just under 1.7 million deaths were attributed to those caused by the HIV/AIDS virus. Road traffic fatalities were 1.3 million.

Surely, along with abortion, the most tragic cause of death is suicide. In 2024, there were 1,073,665 suicides according to Worldometer. Tragically, this means 2,941 people died from suicide every day in 2024. Moreover, this meant 2 people every second died from suicide worldwide.

Completing the top 10 are seasonal flu deaths with 511,877, and malaria with 394,825. Despite being at the tail end of the top 10, they affected a huge number of people.

The Takeaway

Any death is a tragedy, and is felt by many people. It is terrible to see abortion leading the way. So many unborn children have had their life cruelly terminated.

Hopefully, with advances in health, we will see fewer deaths worldwide. But when the world is so divisive and war-torn, it remains to be seen if this is possible.

Rest in Peace to all those who passed away in 2024.
